Scoliosis Treatment

What is Scoliosis (Spinal Curvature)?

The normal human anatomy should be a straight line when viewed from the back, with a slight hollowing in the waist and neck and a slight hump in the back when viewed from the side.
Scoliosis is the name given to the curvature of the spine to the right or left, which is more than 10% degree.

What causes scoliosis?

In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown and usually cannot be prevented. In about eight out of 10 cases, the cause of scoliosis is not found in people with scoliosis. This is called idiopathic scoliosis.

How to recognize scoliosis?

Between 3% and 4% of adolescents have a curvature of the spine between 10 and 20 degrees.
In 0.4%, a curvature of more than 30 degrees is observed. For this reason, especially families with children in adolescence should observe their children very well.

  • If one of the shoulder blades is protruding,
  • If there is a difference between the shoulders,
  • If there is a difference in length between the legs,
  • If one pelvis is above the other,
  • If the ribs of one breast are in front or behind the other,

You should consult a physician who specializes in this field.

When and how to use a scoliosis brace?

If the curvature is around 25-30 degrees and bone and skeletal development is still ongoing, a corset is used. The purpose of the corset is to prevent the curvature from increasing and to regress the curvature as much as possible.
Choosing the right corset according to the type of scoliosis is very important.
Scoliosis corsets should be worn at least 16 hours a day and almost all day.

Is surgery necessary for scoliosis treatment?

Most cases of scoliosis do not require surgery.

  • First of all, the degree of curvature of the spine is examined.
  • Patients with a curvature between 10-20 degrees are followed up.
  • If there is a curvature between 25-45 degrees and the child's height growth has not slowed down yet, corset treatment is applied. The important thing in corset treatment is to measure the child's body and give a corset accordingly. The child should wear this corset for an average of 20-22 hours a day until the skeletal development is completed.
  • Spinal curvatures over 45 degrees may require surgical intervention. The child should stay in hospital for five days after surgery.
